Mt Boi Shares Insights on His Musical Journey and His Newly Released Album “Pop Star”

It’s an honor to speak with you today. Why don’t you give us some details about you and your story. How did you get to where you are today?

Mt Boi: Hello and thank you for having me. The honor is all mine. My name is Chidera Ibeh (aka “Mt Boi”). I’m from Nigeria, Enugu State precisely. I am a singer/songwriter of a combination of R&B,Pop,Soul,Afro-fusion which is now called AfroBeats/AfroPop. I’ve always been musically inclined, even as a child. I started my musical career when I was in Enugu State and it was very difficult there so I had to relocate to Lagos to continue my musical career. The passion that I have for music is so strong. Music has changed my life. I got in touch with an A&R from Zobe Records and they pitched my music to the label and from there things took off and I began focusing on fine tuning my craft and searching for the best possible music producer to work with. Once I could hear the vision I had for my music come to life I knew I was on the right path. From there Zobe Records has been advising, consulting, and directing me on music business practices and put me through artist development. My project “Pop Star” came together and the label and I were pleased with the finished product and began preparing for the release. Now here we are after release and it is getting so much exposure and attention and I’m starting to get the recognition that I feel that I deserve as fans, followers, and listeners are expressing the love they have for my music in feedback.

Congratulations on your latest album “Pop Star”, how do you feel about the newfound success?

Mt Boi: Thank you. I feel happy about it and I thank God that I was able to make it this far. It’s really a dream come true. I can’t wait to see what’s next and how far I can really take this. I’m grateful for the opportunities that I have been given.

What was the Inspiration behind the album?

Mt Boi: The inspiration behind my album is my grand-mom. She was there for me, even when everyone else abandoned me for no reason. She loved me unconditionally and one of the songs from my debut album “Melody” is a song dedicated to her.

What single off the project “Pop Star” do you anticipate its taking off both on charts and with listeners/fans?

Mt Boi: Melody is my favorite song and it has been stuck in my mind since the very first day of the project, however, everyone really seems to like “4 You” and I created a music video for that song so I think it will take off both on charts and with listeners/fans. Everyone has their own favorite though because I created this project while keeping in mind that I wanted every song on the project to be single worthy.

Are there any specific artists or albums that have influenced you through your musical journey?

Mt Boi: Yes, I look up to Big Wiz, Burna Boy, Made in Lagos album, Davido/Wande Coal, and others but WizKid has inspired me the most through my musical journey.

Where do you see your career headed in the following year?

Mt Boi: With God I see my self as the next WizKid and on the level of Drake or Chris Brown because I know surely that I’m here in the industry to take over, but before then, just respecting and learning from the OGs who have been there before me is my priority.

What’s your motto or the advice you live by?

Mt Boi: The advice I lived by says that consistency and positivity is a key to success and prayers conclude it all.

Fast rising 18 year old Filipino artist Angele Lapp steps into familiar territory with a cover of Hale’s “Kung Wala Ka”, and comes out sounding surprisingly sure of herself.

The performance opens gently. Soft keys set the room, and then her voice arrives, smooth, clear, and almost weightless at first. There’s a calm confidence in how she phrases each line, the kind that can make you assume you’re listening to someone who has been doing this for a long time. Then you remember she’s 18, still finding her footing in a crowded music business. Vocally, though, she already sounds like she knows where she wants to go. The control is there, the presence is there, and the emotion never feels forced.

“Kung Wala Ka” has long been a staple for fans of the Filipino alternative band Hale, a breakup song that lingers because it understands how messy moving on can be. The lyrics sit in longing and absence, that hollow uncertainty of imagining life without the person you built it around. In Lapp’s hands, the song stays true to that ache. She doesn’t drain it of what made it resonate in the first place. Instead, she leans in and shapes it around her own voice, and the result feels both respectful and personal. By the time she reaches the bigger moments, she’s fully inside it, and she really does knock it out the park.

The title translates to “If You’re Not Here”, or, “If You Weren’t Here”, and that simple idea carries the whole performance. At 3 minutes and 54 seconds, the cover has a lived in quality, like she’s telling you a story she’s been carrying for a while. It feels close up, almost neighborly, like she’s singing beside you rather than at you.

The video matches that intimacy. It’s a well lit music studio setup, clean and uncluttered. Angele wears headphones, focused, locked into the track as she sings straight into the mic. You can hear how carefully she balances the notes. She starts soft, holds back, and then gradually lets the emotion rise, steady as an undercurrent, guided by the instrumental swell.

Somewhere in that climb, it becomes clear she’s working with more than promise. The range, the power, and the sheen of her tone don’t line up with the assumptions people make about a young artist. She sounds like someone ready for bigger rooms, and she carries the song like she belongs there.
