Canada-Based Lyrical Model Erick Rush Has a Spectacular Cultural Anthem; “One Thing About Me”
Born in Dar es Salaam in Tanzania in 1990 is how the story of conscious rapper Erick Rush begins. Fashioning a life full of adventures, Erick Rush began touring beginning with his native Tanzania before migrating to the United States and eventually settling in his current residence, Edmonton in Canada. He has also been to many African countries including South Africa where he demanded attention with his ear-catching features with Nasty C. Seeking to tell his own story through hip hop, Erick Rush wants to show another side to the rap game while washing away the negative stereotypes associated with hip hop music such as gang violence, crime and drugs.
His lyrical prowess has not gone unnoticed with several accolades to his name including reaching the Top 10 finalist in the Trace Stars music competition and being named Hype’s MVP by HypeMagazine. He was also honored as a People choice nominee by Edmonton Music Awards.
His music is, of course, a blend of different cultural influences and experiences from his many travels through different cities, provinces and states along with lifelong musical influences from some of his all-time favorite rappers such as Lil Wayne, JAY Z and Tupac Shakur. He tells his own immigration stories lyrically over hip-hop beats in ways that many listeners can relate and even those who can’t at least get to be treated to something different and hear the other side of other people’s stories.
Creative at heart and seeking to make a positive impact with his sound one song at a time, Erick Rush is a conduit through which unheard stories are heard. His 2021 album, “Culture Shock: An Immigration Story” which he states as his most powerful to date tells his own experiences as a migrant through different states. I love that fiery chorus that Glace drops here that takes up residence in a listener’s brain for the rest of the day. Debo comes through with some thought-provoking, memorable bars over the bouncing beats before Glace takes over and drives the message home with his masterful flows delivered in first-class lyrical fashion.
