The Howlin’ Tramps is a musical collective formed in Portland, Oregon by the lead vocalist Scarlett Siren who also happens to be a singer, songwriter, vocal coach, and burlesque performer. Taking center stage, her own captivating vocals are normally compared to that of the legendary performer, the late Amy Winehouse, and rightly so for she has an angelic voice that harmonizes with itself to model intimate and evocative imaginative creations. Their latest masterpiece set to release on January 15th, “The Devil in the Details” is an all-in-one encompassing EP that is a distinctive, sole, lone, unrepeatable, solitary, quirky, eccentric, and idiosyncratic culturally psychedelic collection that has the ability to influence psychedelic aficionados everywhere. This is a release that is on course to remind everyone how the much-revered psychedelic sounds used to feel in case they had forgotten.

This is a bold, beautiful, lively, and flavorfully colored musical sound that is laden with expletive vibrancy and a rebellious tone. It is true to their own description of their genre as leaning towards ‘psychedelic swing’ which entails a vibrant concoction that blends artistically the cabaret-style and retro vibes with sparks of psychedelic rock, blues, and jazz. “Ain’t That A Shame” is shameless in the way it unleashes its captivating array of instruments such as the keyboard, the guitar strings, the drum rolls, harmonica, and the emphasized riffs to fashion a gloriously cascading harmonic sound. She backs this with her magnetic and gripping towering vocality that washes over the instrumentals with gracious ease.

“Wicked one” is atmospheric with the guitar riffs and electric guitar syncopation laying the foundation of the melody before her raw and genuine burlesque sound takes over moving you to the core as you enjoy in smitten-like wonder to the captivating melodicism unfolding before your naked ears. “Sun Don’t Shine” is a more complex rhythmic with a continual grove of the bass line that makes you want to move with the authentic aura that has been built with the careful balance of rock, blues, and jazz with the melodic experimentation and memorable lyrics giving it a lasting appeal.

“Fuck You” is as unapologetic as its title with the sweetness and catchiness of flavorful funk and its strong and unrelenting themes calling out what needs to be called out in an arty, fiery, and fantastical mannerism. This is her performing at her most confident and vulnerable self where she is not afraid to say it as it is even if it may rob off a few individuals the wrong way. “The Devil In The Details” is a triumphant return by a group whose strong vocals, bona fide lyricism, and memorable tunes we have been missing. As of now, we have given ourselves over to Scarlett Siren to do with us as she pleases.
