Are you ready to experience crisply refined and improvised jazz music and an almost cathartic and visceral listening experience? If yes, then you are in the right place at the right moment, as the Norwegian musical collective Polyphonic Exophilia (PPXP) have just delivered a 10-track delicacy that shrewdly cuts across traditional jazz with sensual progressive neo-soul for your listening pleasure with their newly released album, “ABRACADABRA,” which is manually numbered.
This is much more than the breathtakingly live-composed music, this is a blissful experience; as they make contact with our ears, the proficiently composed and adroitly improvised harmonies can’t help but seduce listeners, transporting them to heavenly places, sometimes nostalgic and sometimes joyful.
With this project, listeners witness firsthand Polyphonic Exophilia’s sonic tornadoes and extremely confident demeanor, reaching unprecedented heights. Seriously, the performers here effortlessly invoke emotions without ever straining for effect.
Each track here is the result of a unique story flanked by a few improvisations, twists, and turns as PPXP sonically blends traditional and modern soundscapes with authentic Norwegian Jazz!
The album seamlessly transitions from its opening track, appropriately titled “A”; this song lays the perfect groundwork from which the other songs from the album gently cascade, and it is a luxuriously rich masterpiece with terrific melodic play and harmonic improvisations…again a unique perspective that the entire album adopts!
Listening to the pure concoction of bass, drums, guitar, and saxophone exuding such a consistent and hypnotic rhythmic element, I somehow quite underestimated the transcendental moments created by this tune.
Through that performance, a listener is bound to see more images as they get whisked away to different realms, as their souls get nourished and the music unwinds their fragments of pain, bringing respite from the atrocious world.
“A” seamlessly transitions into “AB”- a tune that features a melodic guitar melody, thoughtfully hit drums and bass, and really has that intrigue and drama. It is very lively track that you wouldn’t mind dancing to. I love the elegance and depth added by the sax and a few quintessential traditional jazz elements to authenticate a timeless sound like this.
“ABR” is another tune that boasts great sonic clarity and warmth. PPXP lets listeners savor the thickness and variety of their stylistic caliber. Truly, this is an impeccable tune, with the guest artist eL cHuRrO showcasing the remarkable gifts of an affable master of musicianship with his sitar, which adds flair and crystal clear polish to the arrangement.
“ABRA” features an electric bass, guitar, piano, and such a lovely arrangement that feels cinematic and worthy of the big screen. The melody is stupendous and really hooks the listener from the start to the end.
“ABRAC” features a mellow, laid-back blend of rhythm and melody—one that makes you feel relaxed and is bass and drum driven, taking a listener with it and offering a feeling of great tranquility in ways that only PPXP can conjure up.
I don’t know what Polyphonic Exophilia does to make this album so evocative, breathtakingly beautiful, and hypnotic, only that they do, and that is more than enough reason for any listener to sink their teeth into it from the first track all the way to the last one and savor such a masterpiece in jazz music transcendence!
That cover art is also one of a kind; it is eye-catching and reflective of the album.
