Dee Wile has been the name on everyone’s lips; this Tampa, Florida-based rap model has been gathering momentum and unleashing some masterpieces that have got the whole industry talking. Armed with a unique combination of ferocity, poeticism, and even humor, Wile continues to flaunt with razor-sharp wordplay, admirably sensational blunt lyricism and a commanding vocal style that turns on a dime from sugary to snarling. He has been honing his skills and he now exudes and emanates the kind of confidence and wisdom you can only earn!
“Don’t Forget Your Lighter” is his latest project and #10 at that. This album has got off to a chart-topping reception with many tracks from this 9-piece collection already unanimously acclaimed from the various music platforms. Each and every track here pays homage to musicians, athletes, pioneers and anyone who shaped Dee Wile’s life growing up and everyone who was a source of inspiration to will; therefore, each track bears the title of the relevant luminary in Will’s life.
“Antonio Brown” is the opening track from this collection; – first things first, that intro is hilarious (the talking points!) and really prepares a listener for the masterpiece. Given a very underground and chilled vibe reminiscent of old-school rap, you might be forgiven for thinking you tripped into Nas’ “KID III.” But this is Dee Wile doing magic as he delivers some articulate rhymes over the laid-back yet raw instrumentation in ways he only knows how. The NFL wide receiver would certainly acknowledge such an authentic body of work as this!
“Ron Isley” is as therapeutic as it is entertaining. One thing you will notice about Wile is his ability to capture the attention of his audience with his fluidity and flawlessness and in this track it is no different as he demands your attention with his witful lines over the nostalgic beats.
Just like his luminary, Dee Wile literally walks over the beats in “Kodak Black”- displaying such clever wordplay, maturity, and confidence complemented with uniqueness which really set Kodak Black apart from the other trap rappers (this track got me thinking about the 2016 XXL freshmen Cypher where I first heard Kodak!)
I really dig “Meg the Stallion” because I had already interacted with this smash jam and unlike Drake’s “Circo Loco” from “Her Loss” album, there is no second-guessing the intent of this track; this is an unmistakable tribute to the rap queen Megan the Stallion who has really raised the bar in as far as female rap is concerned and Dee Wile matches that impact with his own heavy bars sandwiched between some catchy hooks as he proves to be a lyrical stallion in his own right. By all standards, “Meg the Stallion” is an edible track!
“Chris Brown” is another mega-hit from this album; intriguingly, this banger gives me a similar kind of vibes as Breezy’s “Go Crazy” (I don’t know if it’s just me but after listening you will know how you feel). Wile does a magnificent job matching the cadence of the more atmospheric, danceable, and thumping beats in this certified jam!
The Bonus track, “Lemar Jackson” featuring PaperTreal and Bongo Mo is pulling some tremendous stream numbers and it is easy to tell why; the 3-piece really did go hard on this one to ensure a memorable performance worthy of any hip hop purists’ time!
There is still a lot to grasp from this seamless collection and if you love the real hip hop; then there is nowhere else you’d rather be this is the place, to take everything off cos’ you home!
