The day found me particularly resting, minding my own business as I let the boredom curse through my entire existence when I received a notification from a friend who recommended to me “Onyx” by Dana Al Fardan; with nothing else to do, I immediately got right into this piece and my attention was immediately grabbed to what was an epic performed and orchestrated piece and I couldn’t understand how up until then, I hadn’t heard of this strikingly talented composer. I developed mixed feelings of happiness and contrition; – while I may not have heard of Dana Al Fardan, this piece well ensured that she now had my attention and I was never going to forget her name!

Dana Al Fardan is a Qatari contemporary composer, songwriter, and symphonic artist who delves deep into the creative process, drawing on her rich cultural heritage to fashion emotionally moving music that is a projection of her love for music, her Arabic culture and a peak into her very person!

“Onyx” to me is the definition of a vintage composed piece; beyond valuation, beyond forgery or imitation. With every passing moment, you can feel that she gave everything into this performance; every inch of heart and soul was put in here for this mind-relaxing and imposing piece.

Build from the ground up, you will find that there is just a way the melody grows with a person as it envelops you in its indescribably detailed melodicism and lyricism and soon you have no control of yourself left. There is that cinematic quality about it and just like in a blockbuster film, the more it builds, the more action unravels and the more you find yourself heavily invested and gravitating to it.

The marriage between the violin and the keyboard and the cinematic-detailed percussion is just out of this world; that and then the euphonious and emotion-drenched vocals that float over the melodies, driving the emotions of this piece is why this is a must-listen.

Words may not be enough to describe such a masterpiece but if you have ever interacted with these compositions, like the ones mostly used as theme tracks for movies and series, then you have an idea of just how glorious “Onyx” is.

While my day started on a low note, I’m happy to report that after listening to “Onyx” God knows how many times, I was more motivated than I have ever been!
