The musical competence, experience, and artistic skills of Clay Joule always give his songs a deep and vibrant life. It is always so surreal to get lost in the deeply evocative musical world that he authenticates. He is an artist who makes magic happen—everything he creates has his blood running through it. His raw, harmonious, and soulful vocals give vibrant life to the music’s anthemic lyrics. His gift for storytelling is as apparent on stage as it is on paper.
The track “Drifters” was originally penned by Joule back in 2001, when he was battling another bout with homelessness. This new song, featuring female vocalist Elisa Mammoliti, was released by Truwan Studio.
A very deep and personal masterpiece that is guaranteed to provide solace to so many people battling both physical and mental homelessness, I just love how both Joule’s and Elisa’s vocals are theatrically colored.. It actually feels like watching a stage play in the theater about a homeless story. The ensuing visual work is also in perfect sync with the performance; this is truly an emotional piece of work.
This track is a dedication to all forms of physical and mental homelessness. Most people don’t understand that homelessness goes beyond the four corners of a house or just a roof over one’s head; it is more than just being hungry, naked, and having nowhere to live. Sometimes, the greatest homelessness is being undesired, unloved, and uncared for.
A lack of family affection in a family is a major contributor to mental homelessness. As someone who has dealt with homeless and foster children, I’ve never encountered a child who couldn’t be reached. This is to say that we should be more kind, caring, and understanding of people going through various rough edges and emotional storms.
And good God, Clay either has a harmonious voice or sounds like a hopeless homeless person over the stripped-back melodies that maintain their core blues rock feel so that the raw vocals and message behind the lyrics shine.
I just hope that everyone finds a home and love of their own and that we can all be more understanding and kind to one another without being too judgmental. Homelessness isn’t just a social problem; mankind has always been deeply flawed!
