Based out of Bakersfield, California Big Hoop is a versatile hip-hop and rap artist who has studiously been impacting the fabric of the genre. Ultimately, he prides himself on his non-conformism, which allows him to joyously break a few rules here and there in service of a sound with widespread appeal. He doesn’t want those who don’t dig the rap sound to feel necessarily left out, which is why he incorporates melody into his rap and tackles deeply relatable and emotional subjects about love, mostly born from his own experiences with the women he’s been with in the past.

Well, in that spirit of transforming real-life stories into melodies with near-universal appeal, Big Hoop is set to release his new 6-track EP “More Than Friends” with lyrics that explore his past relationships, the good, the bad, and the ugly.

The story starts with him dating and falling in love with his high school sweetheart before she broke his heart, leading him to spend some time alone and venturing into a road of self-discovery and near self-love. After taking some time off and rediscovering himself, he decided to try again, and he’s been in the game for 3 years, drawing on his experiences to create this 6-track EP.

Through this EP, Big Hoop takes the listener through true love, toxic relationships, and simply letting that guard down and allowing himself to become vulnerable without being naïve…he still has insurance in case things don’t work out for him. This is basically the real-life dating world packaged in the form of catchy, infectious, hypnotic, and thought-inspiring melodies that are a joy for passionate music listeners.

“Knee Deep” is the kind of tune that is engaging and rhythmic. His lyrical flows blend harmoniously with the bouncing beats for that special cocktail that feels so addicting and unforgettable. The beats are slick, and Big Hoop’s lyrical delivery is smooth!

“Champagne Shower” is champagne poetry redefined, with that amalgamation of nostalgic R&B adding to the sonic elegance and flair of this magical tune. The guest vocalist does well to embellish the track with that hearty dose of R&B, and Big Hoop enhances the track’s appeal with his poetic flows and captivating cadences.

In “Ms Jackson”, Big Hoop comes off bare-knuckle and proves he can be hard-hitting when the occasion demands. I feel this is the most lyrical track from the collection, and I couldn’t help but draw comparisons between his delivery and Joyner Lucas’ own lyrically mesmerizing style.

That concoction of hard-hitting rhymes, intellectual wordplay, and vivid metaphors is in service of something greater than himself, and he knows it.

“More Than Friends” is not only a glimpse of his past and present relationships but also a message to the future woman he’s going to interact with. This is who he is and he’s trying to make any potential woman who’s going to be in his life aware because he ain’t making the same mistake again….following the adage ‘fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.

“More Than Friends” will officially be available for streaming on April 28, 2023.
