Benjamin Mkapa who ruled the East African country, Tanzania, for 10 years has died.
The news was announced on Friday morning by President John Pombe Magufuli and he later announced a 7 day national mourning period where all flags in the country will be flown at half-mast.
“I call on all Tanzanians to receive the news of his death and to pray for Mzee Mkapa. More information will be released but Mzee Mkapa is no more,” he said in a brief television statement.
“I will remember him for his great love for the nation, his piety, hard work and performance in building the economy,” Magfuli said.
“Magufuli asks all Tanzanians to remain calm, patient and united during this difficult time,” a statement from office of the President said.
It is still unclear what caused his death but the President said that details will be given later.
