Sheer genius is demonstrated by the fascinating versatile music producer and songwriter alxwnth in his new single “adderall.” The impeccable artist’s tracks are creatively entertaining and captivate the audience with an immersive and catchy vibe.
We’re lucky enough to have sneaked in for an interview with a talented artist. He was generous enough to lend some of his precious moments as we gleefully stumbled deep into his personal and professional life. Here are some excerpts from the interview:
It’s an honor to speak with you today. Why don’t you give us some details about you and your story. How did you get to where you are today?
My name is Alex and I go by stage name alxwnth (previously known as alexwenthome). My first encounter with making music was around middle school when my friend and classmate was recording his rap verses at my home studio, which at that time consisted of my parents’ PC and an old mic.
Then, during the sophomore year at the university, being probably at my lowest, out of the desire to find some ways of expression, I got into producing electronic music. After playing around and releasing a few instrumentals on SoundCloud, I made my first album “Astronomic Fatigue”. And only after 3 years it got re-released as the complete edition including some reworked demos on all major platforms.
The latest major step so far happened in summer of 2020 when I discovered hyperpop, which shaped all things I have been doing musically since then. Even though I have tried to mimic many things in the genre, I still keep that mellow feel, carrying it through since Astronomic Fatigue days.
Congratulations on your latest track “tonight”, how do you feel about the newfound success?
“Tonight” is a big step towards shaping my direction in music, refining vocal style and trying new things. This is the first song that was produced not by me and I felt extremely nervous before releasing it, but the track has been perceived pretty well so far and I cannot be happier about that.
What was the inspiration behind the single?
For me this is a very conflicting single. Musically it represents where I am now. Lyrically it represents where I was 5 years ago. It’s a farewell and new beginning at the same time.
Are there any specific elements you like to throw into your songs?
Most of the lyrics rely heavily on the topic of mental health, bad habits and destructive coping mechanisms. For example, “clozapine” is literally about schizophrenia with lines like “every time I take my pills she goes away somewhere”, which is the direct allusion to the whole “cute schizo gf” meme phenomena. “Adderall” is about ADHD and “tonight” is about depression and state of despair.
Often you can hear lines about smoking cigarettes – still my biggest negative habit that shapes my creative identity in a major way. Second most prominent topic is self-harm. I usually deliver these lines in semi-direct way and try to recreate the emotional state by using related imagery: blood, scars, “tools”, etc.
Another thing I like to do is to include very slight religious references and allusions to other lyrics. Even though I’m not an extremely religious person, the concept itself is fascinates and captivates me.
Musically, the most prominent element is heavily processed vocals. So far, all songs that include my vocals have up to 10-15 effects per mixer track.
What has remained as your constant source of inspiration throughout the years?
I’d say music and art in general. I’m constantly looking for new sources of inspiration everywhere I can find them and try to incorporate the emotions they evoke in lyrics and melodies I make. Another huge source of inspiration is my own mental state, fears and echoes from the past.
Do you have any dream collaborations? Who are they?
I really dream to work with shinigami. I feel like we have similar vibe both musically and personally especially looking at his latest works.
What’s something most people don’t know about you?
Well, that’s a tough question since there are a lot of things people don’t know about me. I think the most important thing that most don’t know is how my past shaped the person who I am know and things I had to do to overcome. And I’m pretty fine with that. You’d better know me for who I am right now that who I was 4-5 years ago.
For our final question, is there anything else you would like to add?
There are some pretty big news coming soon. Right now, I’m in the process of setting up a management company to take care of main musical aspects and providing genuine support to small artists that world needs to hear. Also, there’s an LP coming in October 2021 so stay tuned.
